User Guide To Backpacker Hostels

Backpacker Hostels

Hostels tend to offer budget accommodation. Backpacker hostels are so named due to the fact that most backpackers are students and/or adventurers, looking for a budget vacation in terms of accommodation. In Australia and New Zealand, the term "backpackers" typically refers to the hostel accommodations, while in North America and Europe, "backpacker" refers to the person taking a budget vacation (with or without a physical backpack!). We'll be using the term "backpacker" in its Australian context of course.

The typical traits of backpacker hostel accommodation are based on the principles of shared amenities. Most hostels have a central kitchen, more than one bed in a large room, shared bathrooms on each floor and a shared living room/TV room. Cost is the primary basis upon which backpackers can differentiate from hotels; allowing shared facilities reduces both physical space needed for the hostel and per person rental.

While backpackers are usually used by travelers for short durations, they may also be used for longer stays to house seasonal workers, people out on parole or bail, and professionals in need of temporary housing.

What should you look for before Choosing a Backpacker Hostel

Assuming you are an independent traveler looking for cheap accommodation, here's how you can narrow your selection of backpacker hostels. Look for hostels with:

  • Clean environs (room and bathroom especially) since you'll be sharing your accommodations with multiple travelers
  • Spacious and comfortable living area since this is where you'll be spending some of your time socializing with other travelers
  • Clean linens (you may be required to bring some or all of your own, including towels)
  • Kitchen with basic appliances such as microwave, toaster, coffee maker, kettle, stove, fridge, etc
  • Free wi-fi internet connectivity to connect your laptop
  • Plenty of electrical sockets for connecting your laptop, charging your mobile, etc
  • Laundry services
  • Lockers for storing valuables
  • Depending on what else is near the hostel, entertainment options may be important, such as free movie nights, dance parties, contest nights, swimming pool, barbecue grill, etc
  • Additional perks such as shuttle service to and from the airport or city, eco-friendly lodgings, and tour operator kiosks.
