User Guide To Sailing Schools

Sailing is the art of controlling a boat with large sails. Although it may look easy, a sailor or the person who is on the boat must manage the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of the boat. Mastery of this skill requires a lot of experience and knowledge in boats and the varying sea and wind conditions. There are a number of sailing schools in Australia that provide lessons to those are interested in learning to sail a boat. Although pricey, these sailing schools are well worth the money when the student has finally managed to finish his program and begin to sail a boat on his own.

Sailing lessons include basic sailing techniques such as trim, tacking and jibing, reducing sail, sail trimming, hull trim and heeling, to more complicated matters such as the parts of the boat.
Before a sailing student or someone who has finished sailing school begins to sail on water, there are certain requirements that need to be fulfilled such as boat licensing.

In Australia, each State and Territory has different laws regarding the licensing of commercial and recreational boats. Each State and Territory has different requirements that a boat operator needs to meet in order get the boat into the water and sail safely around the Australian coast.
Boat licenses are an important requirement before a person can sail in open waters. It is for the safety of the owner, the crew, the passengers, other boaters and the boat itself. It is best to obtain the proper boat licenses regardless of the vessel's size and attending a course and license. Boat course and boat testing will provide the owner with valuable information on safe boating and navigation in Australian waters.

Recreational yachting tips

  • Bring all the necessary items you need for your trip. You will be away from land for a time and there are no stores available lest you forget something.
  • Always bring life jackets for you and your family and friends safety aboard.
  • When anchoring, consider the sea bed where you'll drop anchor. Sand is the most ideal while rocks should be avoided. Think about other factors such as the wind and the tide when anchoring overnight.

Things to remember when getting a boat license

  • In Australia, most States recognize the boating licenses of other States but for a short period of time only. Always check the Maritime/Boating Authority of your State for interstate boat licenses and requirements.
  • There are some countries that recognize the boating license of Australians and will allow you to sail within their waters. However, it is recommended to check directly with the Maritime Authorities of each country you intend to sail to in advance.
  • International boating licenses are recognized by some States but only for a short time. It is best to obtain the appropriate license locally for the Australian State waters to avoid problems with authorities.

Tips when hiring a boat

  • Check that the boat has all the safety equipment that goes with it including foul-weather gear and lifejackets.
  • Take as much as you can, you might stop at places where there are no cash machines.
  • Have a good idea of the proposed itinerary and be clear about where you are heading on a chart.
  • Have an alternative plan in case the weather does not cooperate.
  • Bring medication in case you suffer from seasickness.
  • Sensitive electronic equipment and gadgets do not mix well with sea water.
