Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique, as the name implies, was developed by Frederick Matthias Alexander in the 1890s. F. M. Alexander was an Australian actor who had been suffering from frequent laryngitis. After consulting numerous doctors, none of whom could provide a solution, F. M. Alexander realized the tension in his body and neck could be the cause. He changed the way he used to move and speak and within a short span of time was able to cure himself of his problems.
Unlike other alternative therapies the Alexander technique is not a procedure or operation. It is more akin to reprogramming the way your body moves and performs even the smallest of actions such as picking up a book or sitting in a chair. By correcting your posture according to the Alexander Technique you are able to relieve pressure or tension in various parts of the body which can in turn rectify pains or aches.
How the Alexander Technique Works
The Alexander Technique does not rely on routine exercises; rather, it concentrates on changing the habits of its students. Students are usually asked to perform everyday tasks such as walking, getting up or sitting. The instructors observe the students and then make small adjustments to the posture of the students. Gentle touches allow the students to clearly feel and see what they are doing wrong.
Who Can Benefit From the Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique can be beneficial to anyone who is suffering from chronic pains or stiffness. It is particularly useful for people who perform repeated actions such as:
- Musicians
- Athletes
- Actors
- Stage Performers
How to Choose an Alexander Technique Teacher
Before deciding on a teacher it is important to:
- Ensure they are accredited from associations such as the Australian Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique
- Speak to the teacher before the class so that you know what to expect during your session
- Understand that the Alexander Technique teacher is not a doctor and will not be able to give you a diagnosis of your illnesses
- Share information about any injuries or handicaps that might affect your movement or posture
